Destin, Fla., Aug. 19 – On Aug. 15, more than 100 paddlers set off in the churning crystal clear Gulf waters behind The Back Porch Seafood & Oyster House for the 4th Paddle at the Porch. Kieran Grant of Winter Park, Fla., and Kimberly Barnes of Hobe Sound, Fla., each won $1,500 for setting the best times in the male and female divisions of the Six Mile 12’6” Elite Race. Second place finishers Conner Bonham of Fleming Island, Fla., and Katherine Pyne of Bradenton, Fla., each won $1,000, and third place finishers Abraham Wilson of Gulf Breeze, Fla., and Bernadette Leach of Miramar Beach, Fla., each won $500.
The purse, which totaled $6,000, was possible through sponsors The Center for Cosmetic & Family Dentistry, Destin Commons, Okaloosa Heart & Vascular Center, and ResortQuest by Wyndham Vacation Rentals.
Racers, ages 6 – 72, represented nine states, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin, and two racers traveled from Great Britain. In addition to the Six Mile 12’6” Elite Race, they also competed in additional six mile categories, three mile categories, a one mile recreational race, and a kids’ fun race. A portion of race proceeds benefited Building Homes for Heroes, a non-profit organization that builds or modifies homes and gifts them, mortgage-free, to veterans and their families.
