Covenant Hospice Selected to Participate in Medicare Care Choices Model
Covenant Hospice has been selected to participate in the Medicare Care Choices Model, announced recently by Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia M. Burwell. The model provides Medicare beneficiaries who qualify for coverage under the Medicare Hospice Benefit and dually eligible beneficiaries who qualify for the Medicaid Hospice Benefit the option to elect to receive supportive care services typically provided by hospice and continue to receive curative services at the same time. This announcement is a part of a larger effort to transform our health care system to deliver better care, spend our dollars in a smarter way, and put patients in the center of their care. Covenant Hospice is one of 140 hospices nationwide and the only hospice provider locally invited to participate in the model. Covenant will begin implementing the Medicare Care Choices Model services Jan. 1, in Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, and Walton counties.
Shelter House Holds Annual Backpack Drive
Shelter House is collecting school supplies for the children served by the agency. Before the school year begins, Shelter House advocates will set up a store displaying the donated items where kids and their moms can “shop” for exactly what they need to head back to school in style. Items needed include backpacks, lunch boxes, college rule paper, glue and glue sticks, three-ring binders, tabbed dividers, index cards, highlighters, scientific calculators, graph paper, USB thumb drives, protractors, Post-it notes, and pencil pouches. Supplies are needed for both boys and girls. In addition to hosting the school store, Shelter House will bring in hair stylists to provide free haircuts for the children and their mothers. Pampering professionals will also be on hand to offer free waxing and massages to the moms.
Donations can be dropped off by Aug. 10, at the Shelter House Program Office located at 16 Ferry Road, SE in Fort Walton Beach, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays. If your business or civic/religious/professional organization would like to host its own drive, please contact Shelter House at (850) 243-1201.
Palizzi Joins Sacred Heart Medical Group in Panama City Beach
Dr. Barry Palizzi, a board-certified family medicine physician, has joined Sacred Heart Medical Group’s practice in Panama City Beach. Palizzi cares for the entire family and has special medical interests in pediatrics. He is passionate about utilizing preventive medicine to help his patients maintain a healthy lifestyle. Palizzi also enjoys treating musculoskeletal injuries in adults and children. He received his medical degree from the Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Des Moines, Iowa. He continued his training at the University of Missouri – Kansas City, where he completed his residency program in family medicine. The Sonder Project Nears Completion of First Water Well
The Sonder Project announced that it has begun construction on a water well for the village of Bagyame in Burkina Faso, Africa. The people of this village have been walking nearly four miles one way just to retrieve the muddy, filthy water that they so desperately need to survive, a distance that will only become greater as they near the end of their rainy season. This photo shows some of the work as the well is being constructed. In September, representatives of the Sonder Project will be traveling to the village to help construct a school and bring deworming medication in hopes of setting this community up for success and thus breaking the cycle of poverty.

Presented with support from ResortQuest by Wyndham Vacation Rentals and Real Estate as part of MKAF’s 20th anniversary celebration, the daylong Bluegrass at the Beach music festival will be presented at the Cultural Arts Village on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
