United Way Adopts Community Impact and Investment Model
The United Way of Okaloosa-Walton Counties has announced its adoption of a Community Impact and Investment Model starting this year. Operating autonomously from United Way Worldwide in all but name, each local United Way is free to craft its organization according to the needs of the local community. During the past 60 years, the United Way of Okaloosa-Walton Counties has committed itself to the traditional payroll deduction campaign and funds distribution process to more than 40 local charities. However, in accordance with the national trend there has been a decrease in the traditional work place campaign.  To cope with this, many United Ways have moved away from funding the individual needs of individual agencies and instead focus on the needs of the community to measure impact. Once they’ve identified a set of goals to be addressed, it becomes easier to fundraise for those specific needs and allocate funds in the form of grants to specific non-profit programs that will target them.  This is the model the United Way of Okaloosa-Walton Counties will be adopting for its 2017 Campaign.  To get involved, please contact Sarah Voltmann Costello at sarah@united-way.org

Students Help Restore Critical Habitat Along Choctawhatchee Bay
As the school year begins to draw to an end, students across Okaloosa and Walton counties are also wrapping up a year-long restoration project. Throughout the 2016-2017 school year, around 2,300 students at 22 elementary schools participated in Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance’s Grasses in Classes Program. Grasses in Classes encourages students to develop an interest in the local environment by growing shoreline grasses at their school. Throughout May, these students saw the hands-on, science program full circle by taking a field trip to Choctawhatchee Bay. Rotating through stations, students not only explored the habitat they learned about all year, but also planted their smooth cordgrass at a restoration site. For more information about the Grasses in Classes field trips, or to schedule an interview, please contact Brittany Tate at (850) 217-5382 or tateb@nwfsc.edu.
